Alfredo "Lelo" Jacques Memorial Golf Tournament
The 2008 Golf Tournament will be held on October 10, 2008 and is expected to draw a larger attendance than in 2007. The Golf Tournament will be held at the Vista Hills Country Club. Proceeds will support the agency's Money Management Program which keeps clients from becoming homeless and ensures they receive food and medical services.

The “Lelo Jacques Memorial Golf Tournament” is named after Mr. Alfredo Jacques, a co-founder of LULAC Project Amistad and long time member of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens). Mr. Jacques was a member of the LULAC Hall of Fame and served the community of El Paso in countless boards and organizations. Mr. Jacques passed away in May 2007 and until his death was an active member of the agency’s board of directors.
Ms. Kristi Albers was “Celebrity Golfer 2007”. Ms. Albers career spans 22 years in the LPGA and has played in hundreds of golf tournaments throughout the nation. Her career low is 62 and her career earnings exceed 2.2 million dollars.
The 2008 Special Guest in Mr. Ray Sanchez, Member of the El Paso Sports Hall of Fame and "Dean" of the El Paso Sportswriters.

Papeleros with A Purpose
Congressman Silvestre Reyes was one of the thirty local celebrities who supported this fund raising project by selling newspapers on behalf of LULAC Project Amistad. The fundraising drive was sponsered by the El Paso Times, El Paso Electric Company, McDonald's and Coca - Cola.
Other celebrity newspaper hawkers included: Hector Gutierrez, Felipa Solis, Nicole Ayoub, Chief Wiles, Kevin Lanahan, Hector Montenegro, Don Williams, Danny Anchondo, Art Fierro, Nick Dominguez, Manny Mora, Andrea Simmons, Lorraine Wardy, Jessy Castaneda, Janet Aguilar, Paul Strelzin, Abel Rodriguez, Dorthy Baca, Sergio Lewis, Salvador Balcorta, Estela Reyes, Ken Molby, Dr. Richard Rhodes, Tury Huerta, Jaime Esparza, Suzy Byrd, Veronica Escobar, Yvonne Sanchez, Dr. Lorenzo Garcia, and Troy Barrett.
Project Amistad President Enriqueta "Queta" Fierro and her team brought in more than $ 1,500 by selling newspapers at Montana and Airway and by taking pledges ahead of time.
"I know that we certainly hope that it will grow in future years and we will really make big money," Fierro said. "It was fun, we had a great time, and if I'm here next year than we'll do it again." The famous and not so famous sold the El Paso Times at 22 of the busiest intersections in the city. The event, which included 170 volunteers, was to help LULAC Project Amistad and raised more than
$ 12,000 to benefit local elderly and disabled people.
In 2008, "Papeleros with a Purpose" will be held on November 2.
Annual Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Awards
Once again, Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Awards Corporate Dinner was a great success. Four hundred persons attended the annual coporate dinner. This year's recipients of the LUCY G. ACOSTA Humanitarian Awards were: Mrs. Deane Miller, Roberto Canales, M.D. and Ershel Redd. The agency YMCA was the agency honored this year due to their any programs throughout the greater El Paso area. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the El Paso YMCA's founding.
Persons served by funds raised from this event include elderly and persons at risk. Over 125 people are served by this program and caseworkers ensure each person served has a place to live, food and have their medical needs met.
LULAC Project Amistad's annual Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Awards Dinner was held on April 30th at the Wnydham Hotel (airport) at 6:00 P.M. with a reception and silent auction, followed by dinner at 7:00 P.M. Funds raised from this event support the client health and welfare fund used to provide financial assistance to elderly clients and persons with disabilities who lack funds to meet their basic needs.
